Economy car fuel performance was stronger in the ’80s with several models getting 40-plus MPG. The typical 09 model year econo car gets in the low-mid 30s highway and mid-high 20s city and is considerably heavier than their 80s equivalents. The 09 Honda Fit for example, has a curb weight of 2,489 pounds, a 1990 Geo Metro weighed 1,620 pounds, almost 1,000 pounds less with a consumption of 38 city/41 highway. The Fit gets 27/33. The added weight means modern cars require larger, more powerful — and less fuel efficient — engines. The Geo sported a 1 liter, 3-cylinder engine rated at 49 hp, the Honda Fit a 1.5 liter four with 117HP. One reason is consumer's appetite for weight-adding/power-sapping creature comforts like AC, electric windows and sunroofs, They also want a car that can reach 60 mph in under 11 seconds .
